Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Theta Phi came together to start up their first annual toy drive for Tampa General Hospital this holiday season. From Nov. 15 until Dec. 2, there were boxes around campus for student and other members of the community to drop off unwrapped gifts to be delivered to sick children in the hospital.
Christian Caiazzo, Sophomore and marketing major, and Autumn Bell, Senior and marketing major thought of the idea of having a toy drive and saw it as a great way to give back to the community.
“I believe this event will be pretty big, not only because you get community service hours for donating but because people want to give back to the community, especially to those children in the hospital that won’t get to go home during the holidays,” emphasized Ciazzo, regarding how successful he believed the event would be.
Anyone was welcome to drop off gifts to five of the locations around campus: Residence Life, The Mailroom, Campus Security, Student Activity Building, and Greek Life. Flyers and other signs were hung throughout the University and posted on social media further explaining the event and where to drop off donations.
The sorority and fraternity plan to make the toy drive an annual event for all the members of the Saint Leo community to get involved with. They’ve even created a special banner, which they plan to hang each year.
The toy drive was a rousing success; almost 80 toys were collected. Many children will have a very merry Christmas after all.
