On Sunday, Mar. 25th, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. hosted a walk around campus beginning at 9 a.m. to support the March of Dimes.

The March of Dimes is a nonprofit organization that focuses on preventing premature births. On the March of Dimes’ website, their mission states, “Prematurity is the #1 killer of babies in the United States. We are working to change that and help more moms have full-term pregnancies and healthy babies.” Donations to their organization go towards education and care for expecting mothers in an effort to prevent premature births and ensure healthy pregnancies.

The on-campus walk brought students together in support of the cause. It was an educational and community building experience, as Jarred Pernier, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., informed participants of the March of Dimes’ mission, work, and accomplishments throughout the walk. The walk began at campus safety, looped around the SCC building, and ended back at campus safety.  Students walked the path three times together.

“Something as simple as a walk is amazing. March of Dimes is an organization that impacts us all, so to go out there and show support with different organizations by walking is honestly super powerful,” remarked Jennifer Connell, Panhellenic President, regarding the event.

The event was preceded by a fundraiser by Sigma Sigma Sigma, who sold March of Dimes shirts. Students were eager to participate in the fundraiser, to support the cause and shirts quickly sold out.

Following the walk, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. hosted an exciting and well-attended football game to fundraise and spread awareness for the March of Dimes. There were two teams that competed in the event. Saint Leo University’s Interfraternity Council played against the Unified Greek Council in the game, and UGC came out victorious.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. And Sigma Sigma Sigma are all service partners with the March of Dimes and are working to bring awareness to, and to help the cause. For more information, visit marchofdimes.org.
