The Role of the Library

The school year of 2012-2013 has just started and the papers and homework are already stacking up nicely. A good place to get those done and help with homework, research, and papers is the Daniel A. Cannon Memorial Library on campus.

Now the library is not that indimidating—promise! It is very welcoming and relaxing place. They even have free coffee and couches as well as free caffinated beverages for those late night cram sesssions or those early not so early birds. The library has many different options and resources available to students, from books to technological support. Name it, and they have it.

Hopefully, we all know where the library is located (if not, look to the north of Saint Edward’s Hall). To contact the library about questions or help there is a phone number and reference desk email which are both located on the school website: http://www.saintleo.edu/academics/library. The website covers the majority of online help, research, blogging, and contact information. Available to you on the website is Leocat, eBooks, eReserve, databases, and help. These are all very important tools and are all easy accesible. if you are having a hard time Ms. Smith does offer some technological support in the basement from 8am to 5pm on Mondays through Fridays.  If you can not make it to the library on time, are short on time, or do not have a home computer and are a commuter you can rent a laptop for up to five days!

Usually when someone says the word “library” our minds automatically think books and research and that is not incorrect; books and research are a huge part of the library. When looking for a book (whether it is for a class or personal interest) there are four ways to narrowing the search down immediately. There are four “sections” of books in the library: periodicals, reference, circulating, and reserve.   There are also copiers and scanners provide to print out just a section of a book instead of staying in the library to read the whole thing. If you are doing research and need a book or a quiet place to study there are group study rooms avaiable and my personal favorite working place is on the second floor on the big yellow couch!

Saint Leo University has really gone far to make the Daniel A. Cannon Memorial Library not only useful but also an inviting and comforting environment for all its students; use it to your advantage. I dare you to find one thing in the library that isn’t available or helpful to you; it’s impossible. It’s there for student use so make it your advantage and go to the library!
