Over this past winter break, the Saint Leo community lost two students, Jamie Helbling and Luigi Leroy. They were two very different students, each with unique and distinctive personalities, but each was taken too soon.

Luigi, a 20 year old junior and an international student from Haiti, was taken in a car crash on New Year’s Eve. University Ministry held a touching memorial for Luigi in the courtyard outside the Student Community Center. Fifty students were in attendance. On January 29, University Ministry will be making a trip to Orlando, where a mass will be held in his honor at 10:30 a.m.

Jamie was a 29 year old sophomore who had gone back to school after spending some years working after high school graduation; he also was a local commuter student. He passed away from complications of a brain concussion on January 29, due to a fall he suffered on December 24. A Facebook page remains online as a homage to his life, and his family asks that anyone who has pictures of Jamie to post them on the site. University Ministry held a memorial mass for Jamie in the Abbey church with roughly 150people in attendance.

Saint Leo University mourns the loss of these two students, and their spirits will not be forgotten.
