In the past two months, two Saint Leo students have been claimed by vehicular accidents.

Last year over the winter break, Luigi Leroy, a 20-year-old junior and international student from Haiti shocked the campus with his unfortunate and unexpected death in a car accident. The Saint Leo campus will once again mourn the loss of another student to a vehicular accident.

In the early hours of the morning on Friday, Feb. 11, a 20-year-old Dade City local was found dead. Christopher J. Gupta, a former Saint Leo student and marketing major, was found by a passerby around 6:20 a.m. Gupta appeared to have been thrown from his 2005 Suzuki motorcycle, after losing control of the vehicle while negotiating a turn at the intersection of Jessamine and Jim Denny roads near County Road 474 in Lake County.  According to Tampa Bay Online, Florida State Troopers said that Gupta was traveling south on Jessamine when he failed to successfully navigate a turn, overturning the motorcycle and throwing Gupta into a utility pole. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Though the exact time of the crash is still being investigated, and currently there are no witnesses, those who have any information or witnessed the crash are asked to contact Cpl. T. M. Shields at (352)797-5737.

Funeral Services were held on Feb. 16 at 2:30 p.m. in the Abbey Church of the Holy Cross on Saint Leo University Campus to honor the life of Christopher J. Gupta. Students and faculty are asked to keep the Gupta family in their thoughts and prayers, as well as the family of Luigi Leroy throughout this difficult time.
