Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and what better way to get in the lovey-dovey mood than by checking out some romance novels? While many people know Valentine’s Day as a day to show love to those around you, especially among significant others, many do not know the true story of Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day originated as a Feast Day within Christianity, honoring Saint Valentine, who was martyred for preaching the good word. However, as time has passed, Valentine’s Day is also celebrated as a secular holiday filled with chocolates, sweets, and flowers.

When I thought of how I wanted to spend the month of February, I thought of one thing and one thing only – romance novels. So, I went out in search of those who love reading and sought their suggestions.

Some Saint Leo University students were asked what books made them swoon and, boy, do I have a list for you!

Lizbeth Diaz, a senior majoring in psychology, shared that “Normal People” by Sally Rooney is her go-to romance novel.

“While this novel isn’t a traditional love story, it still holds a special place in my heart,” Diaz said. “It also has a well done television show to go along with it, and I recommend it to everyone.”

Furthermore, this novel is perfect for Valentine’s Day. It brings up feelings of the right person, but the wrong time.

Adrianna Astudillo, a sophomore majoring in English, takes us back to the 1800s with her book recommendations.

“I cannot decide between ‘Persuasion’ by Jane Austen and ‘Wuthering Heights’ by Emily Bronte; they are both spectacular novels,” Astudillo said.

While some readers are Austen fans or Bronte fans, Astudillo is a mix of both.

If you were to ask me, I am more of an Austen fan, with “Sense and Sensibility” by Jane Austen being one of my all-time favorite novels. I can’t stay away from it in general, but the romantic aspect of it makes it special. I am a sucker for it.

Our final swoon-worthy novel is “Beach Read” by Emily Henry. This story is perfect for those who love to read novels focused on the love of reading.

It centers on the story of two authors who compete to draft the best novel for the length of the summer. They slowly start as enemies but end up becoming lovers. It is the perfect read for anyone; no matter what genre you love, this one is for you.

To wrap it up, reading is an impactful experience, no matter what you read, so check out these novels and let us know what you think!
