2020 may have been full of negatives outcomes, but a variety of exciting new television shows, movies, and other forms of entertainment came out this year to help people forget the bad.

New video games released in 2020 quickly gained in popularity, due to people wanting to be occupied during COVID-19 quarantines.

“The best video game was Among Us,” said Tierra Doughty, a freshman majoring in computer science and minoring in art. “Playing the game has been fun because its addicting, simple to play, and good in between my study time.”

“Among Us” is a multiplayer video game where a group of crewmates must perform tasks and figure out which crewmate is the imposter, before the imposter kills the rest of the crew.

Brooke Morgan, a freshman majoring in criminal justice with a minor in theatre had a different opinion: “Animal Crossing was the best! It took the world by the storm during quarantine.”

“Animal Crossing” is a game where you customize your own island using the island’s natural resources. “Animal Crossing” allows you to visit your friends’ islands and virtually interact with other players.

Additionally, 2020 saw the arrival of new music, with many popular artists releasing albums this year.

“I listened to many albums that was lunched this year,” said Doughty. Some of her favorites were “Razzmatazz,” by I Don’t Know How But They Found Me, and “Kid Krow,” by Conan Gray.

“These albums are gems of this year because they contain catchy tunes that are fun or just plain captivating in these stressful times,” said Doughty.

Streaming services like Netflix provided people with plenty of new television shows and movies this past year.

“I think the best movie on Netflix was Over The Moon,” said Morgan. “It taught children how to deal with grief. The movie also showed the audience Chinese culture and tradition, which I enjoyed.”

“Over The Moon,” an animated family film, follows a young girl named Fei Fei as she builds a rocket to go to the moon and prove the existence of the moon goddess. Throughout her journey, she must learn to deal with her grief from losing her mom.

Doughty said that one of her favorite television shows was “The Umbrella Academy.”

“The Umbrella Academy is a fun show to watch,” said Doughty.” You grow to love the characters and their dynamics, the soundtrack, and the plain aesthetic.”

“The Umbrella Academy,” a science fiction television show, follows a dysfunctional family of superheroes who have to regroup in order to solve the mysteries behind their father’s disappearance and prevent an apocalypse from taking place.

Joranya Ramos Correia, a freshman majoring in criminalistics, on the other hand, thought that the best TV show of 2020 was “Grey’s Anatomy.”

“The launch of the 17th season of Grey’s anatomy was amazing, not only because I love that show, but also because, as a medical show, it started portraying the COVID-19 situation,” said Correia. “The show helped people be aware of COVID-19 and its consequences.”

Grey’s Anatomy is a medical-based drama where each surgeon goes through professional and personal challenges. Together, they discover that life is not always black-and-white.

With every year, new forms of entertainment are added to the list of favorites. This year, the entertainment industry successfully kept the world entertained and helped everyone make it through the struggles of 2020.
