State Fair Food: Fattening and Way Over Priced

Before you take a trip to the fair this year, make sure you have a fat wad of cash to go with that appetite.

From fried Oreos to turkey legs, the fair this year has got everything a binge eater, diet breaker, or food lover could ever want. The only thing a fair go’er might want to consider is the exorbitant amount of money that will be shelled out for the fine taste of some good ol’ fair food.

The price of lemonade was four dollars for a 16-ounce cup and refills were a dollar. The price for a bottle of water was three bucks. There are vendors as far as the eye could see and if you were willing to forgo some hunger pains, you could find the right price you wanted to pay for a hot dog, which was no less than four dollars (the cheapest I found).

However, to my surprise, I could not resist trying the infamous fried Oreos. Though the name may put you off from trying, they were actually quite delicious with powdered sugar atop the mound of fried goodness. The price was a little steep for fried food; four bucks for four fried Oreos, but nonetheless, worth the five minute wait in a long line to sample some of Florida’s finest fried creations.

There is always the usual fair food, turkey and pork legs, cotton candy, grilled corn on a stick, and the always-good ol’ fashion hamburger. However, if you are searching for an unusual culinary cuisine, look no further than this year’s state fair. There is a wide selection of weird when it comes to fair food. No, fried Oreos aren’t the weirdest thing at the fair. Have you ever tried alligator tail or snake? There’s a booth next to the reptile center that sells alligator gyros. If that is not weird enough for you, try a fried pickle or a caramel and chocolate covered cricket. Yes, there are all kinds of weird cuisines at the fair; you just have to follow your nose.

There is something for many culinary tastes at the fair, but be careful because 50 dollars goes quick when your taste buds take over. However, if you’re looking for good food without the worry of burning a hole in your wallet, then the Florida State Fair is the place where you can indulge in that sweet tooth, sport that 80’s mullet leather jacket combo, and still get your eat on.
