On September 26 the Saint Leo University Speaker Series resumed with Nancy Tate, executive director of the League of Women Voters speaking at the Greenfelder-Denlinger boardroom in the Student Community Center.

Tate gave an informative speech on what people should know during the upcomingelections.  Some of her most significant points focused on knowing the candidates and their beliefs. She suggested doing research on each candidate to see what their individual plans are for the country. Tate also gave advice on how not to get bamboozled at the polls this year.

During elections, some people will try to defer voters from voting by saying the election is held on a different day from the actual Election Day, or by saying the polls close earlier than the actual closing time..

Tate’s speech had clear impact on students and faculty alike.

“The most importance thing I got from her speech was how people will do things to make you not vote; flyers with the wrong voting date and stating that someone else has won as president. I never knew people actually did that,” Karina Escalera, junior said.

” Voting is much more complicated than most people believe, and that we can’t take it for granted.” Said Jack McTague, Ph.D of the History department “I would make sure I knew where my polling place was located, so that I don’t miss my opportunity to vote.”

Election Day will be held November 7, 2012 from the times of 7am to 7pm. Tate offered in her speech that if If someone is unsure about where their voting pole is located, The League of Women has a website called www.vote411.org that will show a potential voter the correct voting pole they need to go to in order to vote. It also has interactive games in which one can play and learn about elections at the same time. One can even get the forms to register to vote if needed.

The most important message to take away from Tate’s speech, be informed and make an informed vote.
