A new subculture of die-hard obstacle and adventure racers is growing and on Saturday, Oct. 20, they were challenged with a five-mile adventure course in Dade City, Florida.
Savage Race Florida was not a typical flat Florida race. The venue used some rugged terrain with high hills and natural mud pits. To enhance the course’s difficulty, Savage Race implemented over 20 challenging obstacles meant to push participants past their physical and mental limits. Tall climbing walls, cargo nets, and an open water swim are just a few of what was to be expected. If that is not enough, a mud pit with a barbed wire ceiling and a 150-foot water slide added just a little something extra to the race.
At the finish of the race, all participants and spectators enjoyed the food and cold beverages. Live music and entertainment were played throughout the day as well. Savage Race provided everyone, including racers, volunteers, and spectators, with a completely different workout experience.
Savage Race was not only a volunteer effort to help people push their personal fitness levels, but for every 10-person group that volunteers from an organization, there was a $250 donation to the organization and a $25 per person donation over the initial 10 people in the team. The teams were also provided with t-shirts sporting the “Savage Race” logo, and their team was featured on the Savage Race website. Because of these perks, many organizations, such as Greek and philanthropically-associated organizations, took part in order to give back to non-profit and charitable organizations. This was a great way to give back to the community and come together as a community in a day full of activities that challenged people to push themselves to their personal best.
