On October 20, 2012, Progressive Black Men, Inc. held a presentation on how to “Dress for Success.” Although the title of the presentation was “Dress for Success,” the message was that it takes more than just looking the part in order to be successful. Walkens “Ken” Lallemand, President of Progressive Black Men, Inc. introduced Mr. Reggie Hill, Director of Recruitment, as guest speaker. Hill told the crowd that in order to be successful, one must do more than what an average person would do. Hill outlined four major rules that he noticed that successful people following, and says that he leads his life around them and if one desires success, these rules should be your starting point.
The first rule is sleep less and keep busy. There is not enough time in the day to do all the things you need to do to accomplish what you want to accomplish, and sleeping more than five hours a day cuts into a busy schedule. By sleeping less, you can work more, and you should work 12 to 13 hours a day if you want to be successful, says Hill.
Second rule is to network. According to Hill, “networking determines your net worth.” Network as much as you can, and attach yourself to wise people. Find a role model, and observe and mimic what successful people do. Don’t build “clicks” with one power structure, but build networks with the masses, says Hill. Cultivate your relationships, and shake hands with everyone. When looking for a job, most jobs are filled by someone in the network, and most managers already know who they want to hire before they start interviewing said Hill. Start building your network while you’re in school.
The third rule is dedication. Pick a major you like, and cultivate your craft, said Hill. If you like what you do, you will be able to work hard at it. Learn everything about your chosen field, and continue to invest in yourself by continuing to learn. “Let it happen naturally,” said Hill. If you work for someone else, put in the effort as if you were working for yourself, and be respectful to your boss. Find passion in what you do, and the money will follow.
The fourth rule is “Dress for Success.” “Brands are mirrors,” said Hill. Dress appropriately for the position you are in. Don’t dress casual if your position requires you to dress formal, and don’t overdress when everyone else is casually dressed. Keeping a neat appearance and being well groomed is very important for success.
America is transforming and it may appear that many jobs have gone away, but according to Hill, it is just a cycle, and new jobs will form. If you want to be more than just average, then follow the four rules and you will have a better chance of being successful.
At 9:00 pm the presentation ends with Lallemand thanking Hill for his presentation and thanking everyone for coming. Hill, practicing what he preaches, shakes everyone’s hands and is off to another engagement in downtown Tampa.
