Lions Softball Sweeps Double-Header

Saint Leo’s Shyanne DuBois had an outstanding game, causing a huge threat to opponents Florida Southern in which she helped the Lions win both games against the Mocs. Saint Leo showed great skill beating the Mocs 3-1 and 7-4 Thursday evening. Shyanne DuBois hit four-for-six overall,  had four runs scored and was five-for-five in stolen bases.

Pitcher Alison Mitts came onto the field to seal the victory in both games over the Mocs. Mitts had an outstanding game as she led the Lions to a 3-1 win Thursday before pitching the final 2.1 innings in the second game. Mitts finished the day off with three innings and one strikeout.

Another player who stood out was Sara Neuman who started in the second game, pitching 4.2 innings while allowing five hits, three runs and tallied up three strikeouts.

Auria Mounts got her 13thwin of the season in the first game while pitching 6.1 innings and picking up one strikeout to help the Lions take the lead in game one of the series.

Saint Leo’s Bailey McKenna went three-for-five, while senior Brittany Creamer went two-for-four. Both players scored two runs; Bethany Kursch had the last run of the day finishing off the series for the Lions.

Game one recap: Saint Leo 3-Florida Southern 1

Saint Leo used a hit batter, two stolen bases and an infield single in the bottom of the second to get the first run of the game. DuBois was hit on the elbow with one out in the second inning, and then swiped second and third base. That put her in position to score when Bailey McKenna lined a two-out single off the Mocs’ third baseman.

DuBois helped the Lions regain the lead in the bottom of the fourth when she reached on a two-out infield single and quickly swiped another base. Immediately after that, Bethany Kursch dropped a single into the left-center that brought DuBois in with the run. Sommer Pollard gave the Lions another run and a 3-1 lead which completed the first game of the series.

Game Two: Saint Leo 7-Florida Southern 4

The Mocs gained a 1-0 lead over the Lions in the top of the second inning of the second game, forcing Bailey McKenna to the fence at the back of the field. The Mocs’ lead did not last long as the Lions scored three runs. Dubois’ leadoff single set the table, as McKenna delivered an RBI single to make the game all square. Shortly after, Kacie Kelly added two runs to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Lions.

DuBois was a factor again in the bottom of the third, providing the Lions with another steal before scoring on a base-hit by Kursch, following another single by McKenna. After a change of pitchers, Brittany Creamer hit a three-run home run that extended the Lions’ lead to an outstanding 7-1.

The Mocs started to fight back after they came up with base hits and scored another single. This brought the Mocs slightly closer with the score being 7-3. Florida Southern managed to knock Lions’ pitcher Sara Neuman out of the game, which forced Alison Mitts to come and help Saint Leo get the win. Mitts stopped the Mocs by getting the final out with two runners on base, which ended the game with a 7-4 win for Saint Leo.
