After all the hype from forming teams, joining a team from the previous year, and getting rosters turned in for approval before the deadline, intramural flag football season is in full swing. Not only has the new year brought new goals for the league and hopes for an improved program, it has also brought some new faces. On October 18, the games began, and even though there were a few issues with sportsmanship, the referees kept everything in control while fans sat back and enjoyed the variety of games that took place. Some games were really close in competition while others were complete blowouts.

According to William Johansen, Supervisor of the intramural department, the big goal this year was to make the program better. With a little help from Athletic director, Fran Reidy, and Men’s basketball head coach, Mike it has. A significant change from last year is the addition of night games. Last year, every game except the championship was played on the practice field during the daytime. Having daytime games was an obstacle for many of the players because most of them were still in class at those times. So, the big change this year was adding night games when players could get to the fields, allow more playing time, and give everyone a more likely chance to play, regardless of when they have class.

One of the most important things about the Saint Leo University Intramural sports is that it gives all students an equal opportunity to stay active and participate. Being part of a team and playing in the games gives many students something to look forward to. Also, the department has done many things to keep the competition fair; separating guys and girls teams.

If students have not had the chance to involve themselves in an intramural sport, there are still plenty of opportunities to come throughout the year. If students are not interested in playing, they shouldn’t miss out on the exciting neck in neck games. The gametimes and locations are always posted on the Saint Leo intramural department Facebook page. Come support fellow classmates and friends.
