I Drank, Drove, Killed, & WE LOST!

On Thursday evening, September 29, 2011, placed on top of a trailer outside the Student Activities Building, was what used to be a Mazda 626. Renee Napier is the mother of Meagan Napier, who along with her best friend Lisa Jo Dickson, was killed in the Mazda by drunk driver Eric Small-ridge. Napier tows the Mazda from school to school and has made it her mission to raise awareness of the danger of driving under the influence of alcohol, and to promote forgiveness and healing.

You all may have experienced Nintendo’s Wii console. If so, you probably fell in love with its motion controls and or games such as Mario Kart, Wii Sports, or even Mr. Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy series. You’re probably thinking: what more can Nintendo do? Do they even have any more ideas? Well, the answer is yes. Nintendo will soon be launching a new game known as Wii U. It may be a strange name, but what this system has to offer sends gaming evolution into a new era.

Dr. David Persky Spotlight

The Lions’ Pride Newspaper would like to pay tribute to faculty and staff for playing a key role in making Saint Leo University’s environment a great place to learn. This week’s spotlight is on Dr. David Persky who is Assistant to the President at Saint Leo University and is also currently acting as the Saint Leo University’s Board of Governors’ General Counsel until a new General Counsel comes in on September 26, 2011. Dr. Persky earned his B.A. in social science from Southern Methodist University, his M.S. in personnel counseling from Miami University in Ohio, his Ph.D. in higher education from Florida State University, and his J.D. from Stetson University College of law.

Foreign students have C.L.A.S.P. in class

Among many new features on the Saint Leo campus is a group committed to students who are not from the United States. C.L.A.S.P. is a new addition to the Learning Resource Center where students from different cultures find comfort in seeking help with homework, social life, and interpreting other issues while living on campus.

Study USA

Danielle Ferguson is an international student from Northern Ireland who received a scholarship from the British Consulate. The scholarship is called Study USA and is geared to give a business edge to students. Last year the scholarship offered 150 spots to fill, but this year the spots were cut down to 75 which led to Ferguson to be in a more competitive race for this scholarship. The scholarship is specifically for business, and those who receive the Study USA scholarship must take four business classes and one elective each semester so she will return to Northern Ireland with a new international edge in the business world.

Women’s Lacrosse Team

Be a part of a history as Saint Leo University debuts its women’s lacrosse team in the fall of 2011. This will be Saint Leo’s 17th NCAA Division II sports team to be created, and the 9th all women’s sports team to be added to the University. After the creation of the men’s lacrosse team in 2006, the time has finally come for the competitive female team players at Saint Leo.

Nuclear Crisis Raises Safety Questions at Home

The world has followed the crisis in Japan with feelings of shock and terror from the initial news of the earthquake and tsunami to the growing concern of a nuclear meltdown. Crews at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactor have battled endlessly to cool a reactor, hoping to prevent a major nuclear incident.
