Ten Things You Should Do (And Ten Things You Shouldn’t)

A top ten list of the the things you should and shouldn’t do as a student.

Do:

  • Come to class on time. Timeliness makes a good statement.
  • Dress tastefully. Pajamas are comfy, but a great impression is worth more.
  • Be respectful towards others. Respect takes you places that disrespect won’t.
  • Share yourself. Others can’t know you if you don’t tell them.
  • Be creative. Some of the best solutions come from a good mixture of soul and mind.
  • Complete your assignments. It might seem obvious, but completing assignments reduces stress later.
  • Mute your cell phone. It’s disruptive and inappropriate to leave it on.
  • Know when to get help. Whether medical or academic, help is available and should be used if necessary.
  • Get involved. College life is not lived solely within the residence halls.
  • Manage your money. Nothing is worse than not eating.

Don’t:

  • Skip class. Come late if you have to, but come to class. It’s better to learn than ignore.
  • Procrastinate. It’s far more stressful to do an assignment one day before rather than doing it early.
  • Actively disrespect. It’s one thing to have a lack of respect, but another thing to try not to have it.
  • Shut down. It’s strange and new here, but being open will help you not feel alone.
  • Be too creative. Certainly, great ideas are captivating, but make sure it falls in the scope of what you’re doing.
  • Ignore your assignments. Ignoring them doesn’t make them go away.
  • Use your phone in class. Forgetting to mute is annoying, but actively using it is outrageous.
  • Avoid help. It’s not shameful to ask, and that help might be the difference between life and death.
  • Get too involved. Being a member of the newspaper, a fraternity, an off-campus job, and six classes might be really fulfilling, but rest is just as important as work.
  • Become too obsessed with your finances. If you manage it well enough, it won’t require your undying attention. Money is not everything.
