With its diverse campus, Saint Leo University hosts student organizations and activities that highlight international cultures. The Mr. and Ms. Intercultural Pageant on Nov. 12, 2023, showcased the abundant cultural diversity thriving at the university.

The event, hosted by the Intercultural Student Association, allowed nine students—six females and three males—with international backgrounds to showcase their countries and cultures.

The event represented nine countries: Austria, Bolivia, Guyana, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Saint Martin, and the U.S.

The event comprised six categories: flag introduction, speech, Saint Leo lifestyle, cultural wear, talent, and evening wear. Across these categories, participants had the chance to explore their personalities and connections with the university further.

The event had a diverse panel of judges representing countries such as Mexico, Barbados, and the USA. The audience also reflected this diversity; attendees at the Intercultural Pageant came from the Caribbean, South America, North America, Europe, and Africa, representing numerous countries across all continents.

One of the event’s highlights was the introductory speeches, allowing the audience to learn more about each country. Attendees gained insight into the specific aspects of each participant’s country that held significance and their primary connections with their cultures.

Miss Guyana, Ariel Palmer, an MBA student in health care administration, expressed admiration for her country.

“It is the land of liquid gold and a place where you can visit one island a day for the next year,” She said.

It was possible to see how beautiful her country is and its diverse culture that embraces several tastes.

Palmer remarks, “Regardless of what you like, Guyana has something for you.”

Miss Mexico, Tamar Olguin, a sophomore student who majors in psychology, stated that “her hermoso country is rich and resilient and reminds her of the greatness of God’s creation.”

She also said that “the hospitality of the Mexican people is what touches her heart and that it is a reminder to her and her people that our relationship with God happens through cultural experiences.”

Seeing the world’s beauty through those people’s lenses and testimonies was great. Moreover, it was a fantastic opportunity to observe the connections between their personalities and the cultures of their home countries.

The talent category was another highlight of the evening. Participants showed their remarkable skills, thrilling the audience with beautiful artistic presentations. Some danced, sang, and even recited poetry.

Among the male participants, Mr. Puerto Rico and Bolivia performed traditional music from their home countries, delighting the entire audience.

Ultimately, the event was a lot of fun, and people left with the idea that we’re just a tiny part of the world around us.

The winners were Ms. Mexico and Mr. Bolivia, yet the audience could see the multitude of talented international students that Saint Leo hosts.
