On March 29, 2021, the Campus Activities Board (CAB) hosted the “Splash your Insecurities” event. CAB events aim to promote and foster a sense of community among university students, and events like “Splash your Insecurities” reflect this goal.

The event took place on the SCC Lakeside Patio.

“The event’s goal is for students to feel comfortable understanding their insecurities,” said Damion Drackett, the CAB diversity chair. Drackett is also a sophomore majoring in biomedical and health sciences.

The event’s organizers also hoped that students would recognize the value of art.

“We were excited to encourage students to value art as a means of expression,” Drackett said.

In previous years, a similar event was hosted by Dawn McElveen, the director of orientation and parent/family programs. The event was once known as “Smash your Insecurities,” where students wrote their insecurities on plates and broke them in trash cans. The CAB members were very excited to host the event. “It was a fresh start for us,” said Drackett. “Our purpose was to benefit students personally and emotionally,” he added.

Some of the CAB executive board members were also happy to hold the event for the first time. “We aim to introduce new events to the student body,” said Drackett.

Different students stopped by the event, and most of them were very satisfied with their experience.

The event helped students to be more open about their fears.

“I realized it is best not to suppress my anxiety,” said Raeghan Klepczynski, a freshman studying elementary education and minoring in English.

“Writing down my insecurities felt like a weight lifted off my shoulders.”

Students found the event impactful, and some of them are looking forward to it being held again. “I would be happy if more of these events were held on campus,” Klepczynski said.

The event’s organizers were looking forward to hearing from students. Getting feedback helps the CAB e-board decide whether to hold the event again.

“Deciding to host the event again depends on how well the first time goes,” Drackett explained.

Students can read the Student Activities Newsletter and the activities calendar posted around campus to keep track of CAB events. EngageLeo is also a great tool to stay updated about campus events.
