CAB holds meet and greet to make students feel welcomed and give them a place to belong.

When they first begin their college careers, many students are extremely nervous to live on their own. For that reason, many of the activitiesare planned by the Campus Activities Board (CAB) are to help new students adjust to their classes and campus life. On Aug. 22, CAB hosted a meet and greet activity to help incoming students get acquainted with Saint Leo life.

The event, which took place right outside the Student Activities Building from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., drew many students despite the sweltering heat. It is important to the Student Activities Board that they help new students feel welcomed at the University and build a community amongst its students through the events that they host throughout the semester. One of the many goals of this particular event was to have students feel welcomed and be able to help them feel like they found their place at Saint Leo, wherever that may be.

Alexander King, a junior and member of CAB, was among those who helped out at the event. King was eager to meet new students, but also that it might help for returning students to see a familiar face.

“We try to host events where new students can meet and share kind of where they are from, their differences, and similarities,” King said.

Among the new students attending the event was Smive Aurelien, a transfer student from South University in West Palm Beach. Aurelien discovered Saint Leo University when she saw it listed as one of the top universities on a local website. Aurelien chose Saint Leo Univeristy because of the small class sizes and how the staff and students were warm and friendly to her. She is currently majoring in political science and is currently considering a minor in philosophy.

“I was really excited to come after orientation. My orientation leaders Peyton and Juliet were really nice and I didn’t feel lost at all,” Aurelien said.

Some of the Greek organizations also participated in welcoming the students to campus by answering some of their questions about the food in the cafeteria, places to hang out, their classes, campus and Greek Life, and more. By doing so, many new students gained a sense of community between the Student Actvities Board, the fraternities and Greek organizations, and fellow students.

Overall, those students who attended the event were excited to meet the members of CAB, as well as their fellow students. The Campus Activities Board was happy to be of service to new comers and to answer their questions about involvement and all the fun activities that they will host throughout the year.
