The Philosopher Plato said, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything”. On Sept. 17, 2019, the main campus exemplified Plato’s quote with its annual music festival, KirkChella The event, usually held on the lawn near Kirk Hall was moved in recent years, to the veranda of the Student’s Activity Building.

The event meant to mimic the music festival known as Coachella, had performances from various members of the student body such as Erika Girard, Erin McGillin and Christian Silva. The performers had the chance to show off their exceptional talents in music and poetry, entertaining the students and faculty members who came out and supported the event.

Each act was welcomed with hearty clapping and cheering which intensified during and after their actual performances. Those who attended the event were also treated to delicious beverages- like iced coffee and snacks to go with the entertainment provided. Beautiful scenery was set up, with lights and drapes that magnified the ambiance of the place.

After asking some of the attendees their opinion of the event and why they showed up, Sama Touseen, a Graduate student studying Business Management said, “I love music and that’s why I came, I am going to stay here until [the end].” Touseen’s sentiments were shared by the other attendees who were seen nodding their heads, singing along with amused faces throughout the performances.

The event was hosted by University Ministry, Father Kyle Smith, The University Chaplin said “It’s an opportunity for us to showcase the University Ministry, showing people that we are not just here to do spiritual activities but we have fun and secular stuff. It’s a two-hour event that allows everyone to have fun and relax for a little bit, then go back to their regular life and try to enjoy themselves, that’s what we are trying to promote here.”

Kyle continued, “If we have any other events, we want people to know that they are welcomed to join and be involved in the ministry.”
