The Rebus of Food

The word “Rebus” is defined as a literary device that combines the use of Illustrated photos and individual letters to convey a word or phrase/phrases. The newest issue of Rebus magazine aims to explore the relationship between image and text.

The Rebus Launch was held on Sept. 12 and showcased the newest iteration of the magazine in the Fine Arts building on the University Campus, hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences. With each issue of the magazine, they explore the relationship of one thing in relation to life’s connection to others. The magazine the topic of “food” and its connection to the outside world and how food has played a significant role in humanity. Throughout all of history by way of art, science, history, culture and even technology, food has played a pivotal role.

The event was well attended by faculty, students, outside parties and administration with an impressive turn out as the room was full of vibrant faces, eager to learn about the correlation between food and our everyday lives.

Guest Speaker, Dr. Beardslee Kwasny, Assistant Professor of English for Saint Leo University in Virginia Beach shared, “The work I am doing right now is in food ways and how our food ways are tied to our identity, our sense of self, our sense of family and our sense of community. When we are teaching our students about food ways, we are not just talking bout the product, we are talking about the whole process of food. From the moment you are thinking about cooking to the moment you put it on the table”. Dr. Kwasny also mentioned that for her classes, the student gets to talk about the role of food in their lives and the traditions that come with food in their family and community. Dr. Kwasny encouraged students to find what interests them, as much as her research in food ways interested her.

With each issue of the magazine, they explore the relationship of one thing in relation to life’s connection to others.

Dr. Alicia Corts, Assistant Professor of Theatre, also shared her sentiments about the topic. “In this particular issue, I actually spoke about Pinterest and how pinterest actually wants us to perform, even though it seems like we can just pin whatever we want, there are actually rules to how we can do that.”

Corts continued, “So my article explores how that works”. Her presentation explored how one can use Pinterest to share the different perspectives of food, talking about things like color, texture, and balance to what one posts on Pinterest.

The event did not fail in capturing everyone’s attention as the attendants had an almost constant smile on their face, which was demonstrated with enthusiastic clapping after each speaker.
