On Tuesday, Oct. 18, Saint Leo Library hosted a screening of the 2010 western film, “True Grit” for the viewing pleasure of the Saint Leo community. The purpose of the screening, which was held in the Student Community Center Boardrooms, was to introduce the directors of the film, the Coen brothers. The brothers are the brains behind other films, such as “No Country for Old Men,” “The Big Lebowski,” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou.”
True Grit follows the tale of Mattie Ross, portrayed by Hailee Steinfeld, a young girl seeking revenge for the murder of her father. Accompanying her are Jeff Bridges, in the role of the gritty Sherriff Rooster Cogburn, and Matt Damon, as straightforward Texas Ranger LaBoeuf.
The movie itself is a remake of the original 1969 version, which starred John Wayne as Cogburn, and both are adapted from the 1968 novel by Charles Portis.
“True Grit, in my opinion, is one of, if not the most filled movies produced by the Coens. It was the most successful at the box office, people are still entertained by it, and it has everything a movie needs. Action, drama, even some romance. It is the most all-encompassing of the selections.” said event organizer and English professor Dr. Patrick Crerand.
For anyone who missed the screening, there is still a chance to catch the movie again. Saint Leo will soon begin running the film on channel 96.
For those seeking more about information about the Coen brothers, the library will be hosting a symposium on the directors this coming Thursday, Oct. 27. In attendance, will be three scholars who are experts on the directing duo. This will also take place in the SCC boardrooms at 7 PM.
