It’s that time again to elect a new student body for Saint Leo University’s Student Government Union (SGU). As the voting season quickly approaches, students are encouraged to cast their votes on EngageLeo.

“It is important for all Saint Leo Students to consider voting during this election season because the Student Government Union ultimately plays a big role around campus,” said Dawn McElveen, the director of the University’s Student Activities and Family Engagement office.

Voting opens on March 2 at noon and closes on March 4 at midnight.

The candidates’ positions include president and vice presidents of operation, activities, communications, and finance.

The SGU plays a critical role in student life and campus engagement because of the different responsibilities of the organization. Some of these include but are not limited to being a liaison between the student body and administration and promoting educational and social activities that engage students.

“SGU handles all student concerns, requests, or ideas as they are the face of the entire student body,” said McElveen.

On February 22, at 6:30P.M., an SGU candidate forum was held in Selby Auditorium. This forum gave all candidates running SGU positions an opportunity to elaborate upon their plans.

“Something that all students can expect from me during this campaign season is my leadership presence, whether that be from me taking advantage of social media outreach or face-to-face interactions with all Saint Leo students around campus” said Daniel Konesky, a junior majoring in criminal justice, who is running for SGU President.

Damion Drackett, a sophomore majoring in bio-medical health sciences, expressed that he wants his presence to be felt on campus during his campaign for president.

“Throughout the 2022 SGU campaigning season, I am going to do what I do best,” said Drackett. “I am going to be very present around campus, engaging with students formulating intriguing ideas and plans for the Saint Leo community.”

Connecting with students on campus was another common campaign strategy for presidential candidates.

“Other than flyers, and social media posts, students can expect to see me traveling around university grounds to interact with student organizations and smaller clubs to introduce myself,” said Jodea Morris, a junior majoring in bio-medical health sciences.

Morris stated that her campaign aims to inform students about her plans if she becomes president of the SGU.

“I will also make it my duty to provide insight regarding my plans as a candidate running for President, to show all students why I am a great choice for this position,” said Morris.
