On March 5, from 2-6 pm, Saint Leo University’s students, staff, and factually all gathered in scorching eight five-degree weather to attend the annual event of Spring Fling.

The Campus Activities Board (CAB) organizers provided students with refreshing lemonade, customizable ice cream, and tie-dye shirts at the event.

This lemonade stand is no stranger to the Saint Leo community. Students enjoyed grabbing a freshly squeezed lemonade or “half and half” (which is half lemonade and half iced tea) to quench their thirst as they walked around to explore different vendors at Spring Fling. (Image by Crystal Smith)

Sofia Cabrera, CAB’s Campus Traditions Officer, took charge of Spring Fling from the organization, down to the rides present at the event.

“This year, I tried to begin the planning and organization process for this event back in December of last fall to ensure that everything played out smoothly and so that students would have activities that they would enjoy,” said Cabrera.

The CAB held the event on Kirk Lawn instead of its traditional location in “The Bowl.”

“The change location for the event was because we wanted all attendees, whether faculty, staff, or students, to gain a better view of the campus,” said Cabrera.

Some of the rides  included rock climbing and the famous “Gyroscope.”

The Gyroscope is a four-person carnival ride that straps in each individual at a time and carries them on a gravity-stimulated space adventure experience.

The Gyroscope grabbed students’ attention from the beginning to the end of the event. Despite the 85 degrees weather, students waited in long lines to get a chance to experience the thrill of the Gyroscope.

Students got the chance to create their favorite ice cream by choosing a base of either chocolate or vanilla. There was also a wide variety of toppings to complete their ideal ice cream, such as whipped cream, chocolate, strawberry syrups, etc. (Image by Crystal Smith)

“The most exciting thing that I have done so far at Spring Fling was definitely riding the Gyroscope,” said Andira Astwood, a freshman majoring in business management.

Another popular activity that students enjoyed was the spray paint station, where the talented artist created artistic scenes on a card for students per their request.

Since Spring Fling was not held last year due to Covid -19, this year’s event was an excellent way for students to get out of their dorms and interact with each other while having fun

“Not having this interactive and exciting event last year was unfortunate. Hence this year, I tried my best to make this event something that students would not only enjoy but also remember for a very long time”, said Cabrera.

Spring Fling was brought to a very intriguing end with live soothing music and performances by numerous talented artists. In the end, Spring Fling this year was smooth sailing and one to remember.

Usually, CAB would have shirts pre-designed for distribution, but this year was different because students got the chance to tie-dye their shirts with a wide selection of colors. Students loved this part of the event the most! (Image by Crystal Smith)
