Finals are almost here and unfortunately some of us are just realizing that throughout the semester we really didn’t learn much. Luckily, over the years I have found a few techniques that make taking final exams more bearable.
One of the most fundamental parts of taking an exam is identifying the best learning technique for you. After figuring out how you learn best, then understanding how to study will be much easier.
If you happen to be the type of student who takes tons of notes and actually thoroughly reads the assigned texts then you are in excellent shape. Your only task is to find a way to highlight lessons that you that you think will definitely be on the test. Identify key concepts and terms then create index cards to match. Typically reciting and writing important concepts and key terms help a person to remember ideas more clearly than someone who only recites concepts once.
For students who sleep during lectures, daydream about lunch, and pretty much do everything but pay attention, the above method may be out a bit farfetched. Instead, take the notes that you did manage to take, the final review, and the assigned texts noted in the syllabus and head to the Cannon Memorial Library for a chronic “catch up” session. I know it sounds like a lot but don’t panic. You have all the necessary information to pass the test, all you need to do now is focus! If some of the assigned texts require discussion join a study group.
All that studying requires energy. If need be take a break from studying to revitalize yourself. Have some water or your non-alcoholic and caffeine-free beverage of choice. Indulge in a few brain-stimulating foods such as walnuts and blueberries, do a little dance, and get back to studying.
Next set a pace for yourself and reward yourself for every few paragraphs or pages. I’ve seen some people who set gummy bears on each paragraph and eat them when they finish the page. Be sure to set a reward for yourself when your final study guide is completed.
It is possible that the library is not your ideal study spot. Maybe you think the library is overpopulated and you prefer complete isolation. Or maybe the library is too loud, or maybe it’s not loud enough. Whatever it is, it is important to find a study space that works for you. Stay away from your bed because you may be tempted to fall asleep.
For those of us that prefer a certain musical ambience when studying, a good website is https://www.focusatwill.com/. It has a wide array of choices to choose from no matter what your musical interests are.
Study groups are a good way to get some solid studying done, but as you may know study groups aren’t for everyone. Some people aren’t as productive in study groups, probably because they choose to work with close friends and are as a result tempted to do everything else but study. You might want to avoid studying with close friends, especially if they are not taking the same courses as you. Study with people who are in the same class as you.
Now you have all the tips you need to create an optimal studying environment for finals. Keep calm and stay focused.
