A Great Way to Cap off the Year

The team worked hard this semester to collect, package and ship the caps, but it was a labor of love.

On March 22 Saint Leo held their third annual collection of the caps for the Caps of Love event. This event is one that collects caps to bring to a recycling plant. Once recycled, the plant sends a check to the Caps of Love organization which they use to buy wheel chairs for children who are in need. Caps of Love takes place throughout the year as the Saint Leo body shows their sense of community and gathers to sort caps every week for hours to make sure that they get to the correct place. At 12:30 the event kicked off strong with music, pizza, ice pops and shirts being handed out as a reward for all the hard work throughout the year. At about 12:45 the big mac truck came rolling down the hill into the Saint Leo tennis center to collect the many pallets of caps. The caps were carefully loaded into the truck by a fork lift; the truck was on its way to the plant at about 1:45. When President Lennox was asked what he thinks about Saint Leo doing acts of charity for organizations he responded “It is truly an amazing sight to see. This really shows the values of community and respect as this can make a huge difference in a person’s life. Although the caps may be small, they contribute to a bigger cause helping those in need.”  Kenneth Posner was also interviewed to get his take on the event this year, he stated, “this is the third time we are doing this event and it’s amazing to see the growth over the years. The first time this event happened, it was called ‘A Ton of Love.’ However, we quickly saw the issue with this name because we had over a ton of caps in October. The name was then changed to the Caps of Love event and it’s been growing ever since. The first year the event finished with 8,000 pounds in caps, followed by year two with 12,000 pounds and finally, we are estimating this year is a little over 15,000 pounds of caps.” This event is a huge one that truly helps a better cause. Once again Saint Leo University proves that size isn’t everything, and even though we are a small school the sense of community mixed with hard work can lead to big outcomes.
