There are few music artists that can really say they made a huge impact on the music industry. Toby Keith is an example of one who has, especially in country music. Keith helped to make waves for modern country music artists. On Feb. 5, many people all over the world woke up devastated as they heard the news that Keith passed away after a lengthy battle with stomach cancer.
Some of his popular songs are “Should Have Been a Cowboy,” “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue,” “Red Solo Cup,” and “Made in America,” along with many others.
The impact of his death even reached students here at Saint Leo University. Emily Shute, a sophomore majoring in political science, remarked that she was “very sad” to hear of his death.
According to the Oklahoma Historical Society, Keith had a start like many other bands by playing in bars until his 1993 hit “Should Have Been a Cowboy” took off and from thereafter, his band only continued to grow in popularity.
These songs caught the attention of many Americans and became a staple in many family’s homes. As Keith started to gain more attention from the public, due to his catchy music, he was starting to win award after award.
Keith did not let his fame get to his head. He wanted to give back to the community in some way, shape, or form. He chooses to give back by helping pediatric cancer patients and their families.
He started the Toby Keith Foundation to help pediatric cancer patients whose mission, according to the website, “is to encourage the health and happiness of pediatric cancer patients and to support OK Kids Korall, a home for children battling cancer.”
Many prominent artist ins country music felt the sting of Keith’s death. Dolly Parton shared a heartfelt message through an Instagram post, and Zach Bryan shared how sad he was to hear of Keith’s death via an “X” post.
