On the evening of April 4, students gathered on Kirk Lawn to celebrate Culture Day, “Show Me Your Culture,” an event hosted by the Campus Activities Board. Organizations that collaborated on this celebratory cultural event included the Indian Association for Students and The Caribbean Student Association.
This event’s purpose was to shed light on the various cultures on campus and educate the Saint Leo University community about them. Cultural performances by the Caribbean Student Association dance team, food, henna art, and live music entertained students, staff, faculty, and visiting guests at the event. Students were encouraged to celebrate their cultural differences.
All attendees bonded and gathered amongst themselves as they either sat and enjoyed the delicious food provided by the collaborating organizations or while waiting in line for beautiful henna designs.
“This event is a great initiative that the Campus Activities Board made. It is important for students to feel a sense of community and cultural representation away from the comfort of their home countries,” said Berkel Anderson, a junior studying biomedical health science.
Culture and diversity influence the Saint Leo community tremendously as it is the glue that binds most student organizations together and allows the university to articulate who it is and what it stands for. Saint Leo takes pride in being a campus that advocates for community and diversity. This event highlighted this and revealed to all attendees that this campus is filled with various beliefs, religions, and ways of life.
“There is beauty that can be found within the various cultures that are present here on campus,” said Starasia Sinor, a junior majoring in cybersecurity.
Events like “Show Me Your Culture” enable students to understand better the cultures that are seen around campus on a day-to-day basis and provide students with an insight into the beautiful countries represented here at Saint Leo.
Organizers such as the Campus Activities Board, Caribbean Student Association, and Indian Association for Students hope to continue promoting cultural diversity and awareness around the Saint Leo Community!
