Review of “True Beauty”

“True Beauty,” a romantic comedy Korean drama, aired on Dec. 9, 2020 on Viki. The series, originally based off of a Webtoon that began in April 2018, follows Im Ju-Kyung who uses her makeup skills to hide her true appearance.

Moon Ga Young, Cha Eun Woo, and Hawang In Yeop play the leading roles in True Beauty, starring as Im Ju-Kyung, Lee Soo-Ho, and Han Seo-Joon, respectively. Each of these actors played a role in bringing Im Ju-Kyung, Lee Soo-Ho, and Han Seo-Joon to life. Notably, Cha Eun Woo learned Jujutsu to become more like Lee Soo-Ho.

In “True Beauty,” Im Ju-Kyung is known as the beautiful goddess of her school. However, no one knows that her goddess-like appearance is a mask of makeup that keeps her bare face hidden from the world. Im Ju-Kyung soon gathers the attention of the most popular boys in school, Lee Soo-Ho and Han Seo-Joon. Will her secret be revealed to these boys?

Even though the drama has lots of humor and unrealistic plots, “True Beauty” also highlights important life experiences, such as bullying and self-esteem.

Moon Ga Young expressed that she felt that the drama touched on some sensitive topics, such as beauty, self-esteem, and bullying, but thought that these are important matters to talk about, since they are reality for a lot of young people.

“True Beauty” not only follows Im Ju-Kyung’s love story, but also details the lives of the side characters, allowing viewers to watch each of the characters antics and development as the series progresses.

For lovers of cringy cliches, this drama is perfect—“True Beauty” contains a classic love triangle, and the drama’s storyline has many plot twists that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

In conclusion, though filled with unrealistic moments, “True Beauty” is a heartfelt drama and comedy that will keep viewers wanting more.
