Makeup is used to enhance certain features or alter the appearance of the face. Although mostly used on the face, it could even be worn on the entire body. For example, the base of a full face is foundation. Foundation is used to create an even, uniformed skin tone. Some looks are very new and trendy, while others are recurring.

Contouring the face has been quite an essential step in the makeup process recently. Contouring is adding makeup that is a shade darker to create shadows. The color contrasts with foundation, allowing bold facial features not to be hidden.

Sunset eyes have been taking the internet by storm. Just like their name, they are inspired by the sunset. To achieve this look, people use warm colors in their eyeshadow palettes, specifically orange, red, and pinkish tones. Orange is even popularly used by itself. The warm tone makes a vibrant pop on all shades of skin.

Similarly, bold highlighter eyes are in. This edgy look is accomplished by using highly pigmented highlighter shades in palettes. It is so favored that some palettes are even strictly dedicated to bright, bold colors.

To top off most eye looks, liquid eyeliner is applied. People typically go over their shadows, forming a sharp wing or cat-eye. Freshman psychology major Mya Burrows likes the sass that comes with winged liner: “It has a dramatic look to it.” That same eyeliner look can be recreated with eyeshadow. This look differs because of the way eyeshadow blends typically into the skin. In competition with the cat eye is ombre eyeshadow. This method is done by smoothly blending one color to transition into another or using a lighter hue to fade into a darker one.

Eyelashes are becoming bolder and longer. Although false eyelashes were always in style, most people have kept them short and natural-looking. Shantae Whyte, a senior majoring in biology and specializing in health and medical sciences, enjoys the simplicity of a natural lash: “It’s a cute and simple look paired with lip gloss.”

Full, long eyelashes are also in. Aside from applying eyelash strips for a makeup look, this has become a daily trend. Long eyelashes have become so popular that eyelash extensions are offered as a service in many salons. Junior Kyra Mckinney, a psychology major, loves to pair her eyelash extensions with clear lip gloss. She considers it “a look.” Senior Jessica Pittman, an English major specializing in professional writing, also loves full eyelashes. “Eyelash extensions are way more convenient than regular mascara,” she said. “It’s like waking up with a full face if you like natural makeup.”

Eyebrows have always been one of the most important parts of makeup looks. They have even been known to make or break the look. As of recent, feathery eyebrows are trending. Over the past few years, most people aimed for a smooth, painted look. Today, another approach to drawing on eyebrows is on the rise. The feather brow looks more natural, as the strokes resemble hair.

Lastly, white eyeliner is becoming more fashionable. Using white pencil on the lower lash line causes the eye to pop, regardless of the color. This fresh new look allows eyes to not only pop, but it also changes the shape and makes them look fuller. Senior Haley Knowles, an accounting major, expressed her love for white eyeliner: “When applied with eyebrows and lashes, it still gives the face a more natural look. When I don’t want to wear too much makeup, I apply white eyeliner to spice it up a bit.”
