Halloween Safety Tips

It’s almost that time of year again to show off your costumes, eat candy to your heart’s content, prank your friends and indulge in countless parties/outings with your friends.

Halloween is just days away, but this spooky celebration comes with some precautions that should be taken into consideration. Here are some tips to remember for Oct. 31:

1) Pay attention to your surroundings

This is a common safety method, but sometimes when you are having too much fun or think that you are in a safe environment, it slips your mind. There will be persons in costumes who may not attend your university or be a part of your social group. Always be cautious as some people do have ill intentions. Additionally, try to stay in well-lit areas when walking around.

2) Buddy system

Leave and return to campus with the same group of friends or with a close friend, and always keep tabs on each other while out. Never go to the bathroom or leave an event alone.

3) Transportation

Make use of safe forms of transportation, if you or your friends do not plan on driving to a party/event. Apps like Uber or Lyft are great choices for ensuring your safety during the night’s activities.

4) Hosting a Party

If you are hosting a party, create a list of the people you have invited and keep an eye on the guests you allow to enter. You can also hire someone as security if necessary.

5) Fire Exits and Campus Security

Familiarize yourself with fire exits depending on where the party is being held in case an emergency occurs. If you are not on your college campus, take note of where the campus security building is located in the event something goes wrong and you need help.

6) Instincts

If you feel uncomfortable, trust your gut and leave the party or say “no” to whatever may be making you feel uneasy. If you do feel like leaving, tell your friends who you went to the party with and make an excuse, if necessary, to those who may be concerned about your sudden departure.

7) Alcohol Consumption

If you are of legal drinking age, limit your alcohol consumption as you will need to be aware of what is going on around you. It is always okay to have fun, but not too much especially if you are not in a familiar environment. Also, never leave your drinks unattended. Throw it away and get a new cup if you have to go to the bathroom or do something else.

8) Cellphones

Make sure your cellphone is fully charged for emergency purposes. You may also need to make sure you make a last minute check that you turned in that assignment!
