With the holidays coming up, having a few dorm friendly recipes may come in handy for Saint Leo students that do not have access to a fully loaded kitchen.
One popular treat is Rice Krispies. On their website, www.ricekrispies.com, they supply a recipe for those whose kitchen consists of only a microwave. To make this simple treat unique and convert them from everyday to holiday, students just need some cookie cutters, icing, and maybe sprinkles for an extra touch. After making the Rice Krispies and laying them out on a pan to cool, paper plates work just fine too; start cutting out shapes with cookie cutters and ice away! Also, there are premade squares to buy when students are in a pinch for time. Just press the squares together and continue with decorating.
Another popular treat is party mix. It is true that just about anything can be tossed in the mix and can be delicious, but try to keep what goes into it in certain categories; usually sweet and savory, not too many people want to munch on chocolate and cheese at the same time. Students may choose to go out and buy premade Chex, but it can be a lot of fun to put a personal touch on a party mix, or maybe just add in a few surprises to the premade. Students can melt chocolate in a microwave and dip cereal or pretzels into the melted chocolate. Icing can also work well in this recipe. Pick one item from the mix and add a little bit of icing in and stir it in a bowl until it is lightly covered all over. Any icing will work, it only depends on personal taste. When finished mixing, add it back into the rest of the party mix.
One sweet treat that is also simple to make is to break up some Oreos and stir them into chocolate pudding. This is an easy and sweet item that will please a large audience. Also, chocolate chip cookies broken up and mixed into vanilla pudding is a good substitute for those who favor vanilla. Another option is to sandwich either chocolate or vanilla pudding in between two chocolate chip cookies. Soft cookies work well, but be sparing with the pudding because this one can get messy.
Another fun, delicious snack is fruit dipped in chocolate. Since hotplates are not allowed in dorm rooms, students can’t have fondue parties, but if one refrigerates the fruit after dipping into the melted chocolate it becomes a great treat. The type of chocolate doesn’t matter, it only depends on personal taste. Just place the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl and heat until it is fully melted, mixing every so often to get the clumps out. Then, put the fruit on toothpicks for an easy way to dip and place on a plate to put in the refrigerator to be served later.
These treats are dorm friendly and ideal to share with others for the next holiday get together in the dorm. These are just a few dorm friendly treats to hopefully inspire students to make this holiday season memorable and delicious, even if all there is to work with is a microwave. Happy holidays!
