We all can have days that are so exciting or even draining, that we want to tell the world about it, but we prefer not to because we would like to keep it to ourselves. You can still release your thoughts and emotions about that day, just in the form of writing in a diary, allowing us to document our lives and thoughts on paper.
On September 22, Dear Diary Day is celebrated–a very underrated day most people have not heard about. This is because not everyone finds writing down their thoughts to be important or beneficial.
Not only does writing in a diary help you organize your thoughts and record your daily life, but it also improves your writing and relieves stress.
“I used to write in a diary, however, I personally feel it’s not beneficial for me because as an overthinker, I have too many thoughts to write at once. I prefer venting to a friend because I’mable to let it all out,” said Isbella Ruiz, a junior majoring in marketing.
Writing can be a form of meditation that can help you relax your mind and focus on what is happening in the moment.
“I think diarying is beneficial because it allows you to let out your thoughts and feelings in a positive way,” said Jaiden Adderly, a junior majoring in sports business.
Writing in a diary is documenting parts of your life you want to remember down the line. It is the way we memorialize the things that we have been through. This is a very sentimental process to participate in. The words that we jot down are much more than words. They are vital details of the journey that we call life.
These are the times that we remember, either good or bad, happy, or sad. The times that give life to a past that we might very well want to forget or desperately need to remember.
You can write in a notebook, or even an app on your phone. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just something simple to start writing.
If you are not interested in having to write things down with a pen, you can download a diary app and type your thoughts.
This digital version is just as good as manually writing things down.
When writing in a diary, it is your own world and your own imagination, therefore there are no rules.
“Diarying is a way of meditating and a time to freely express yourself,” said Justin Wallace-Jean, a sophomore majoring in marketing.
It is a space created by you for you and if at some point you want to share it, it can be presented as a gift for others as well.
