The soccer season is approaching, and the Lions look to build off a learning experience from last season. The Lions had a tough season last year, finishing 2-11-1 overall and an SSC record of 1-8-1 under coach Tony Paris in his first year as the head coach of the program. It would be unfair to point the blame at one person as the team had to learn a different coaching philosophy.
After a difficult 2017 campaign, the Lions are ready to bounce back and take a step forward. One major difference is the addition of five freshmen to the team, four of which are midfielders. Coach Paris made this recruiting class a priority. “It was absolutely crucial to the success of the program for now and in the future.”
The team is expecting to take a step in the right direction, even with the Sunshine State Conference remaining the toughest division in Division II soccer. “[The goal is ] to have a much better season than last year! It’s tough to predict in such a tough conference as we are in the building phase of the program.”
Building phase or not, the team expects to be competitive. Coach Paris isn’t new to helping build up a program; he was actually the first coach for the Women’s soccer program at Saint Leo. Even though there are minute differences in the rules and style of the game, he does not see it much different as a coach.
“For me, I really did not see that much difference [coaching men’s soccer compared to women’s soccer]. Coaching is having the ability to get the best out of the student-athlete. I enjoy both equally.”
One underrated aspect for a team’s success is a loyal fan base that can will the team on during a tough stretch or help the student-athlete dig down a bit deeper when they are exhausted. Coach Paris understands that and is hoping to give his team a home-field advantage and potentially start a club of supporters.
“Support is crucial for games and can help lift a team that is down to realize success. Our Athletics program is very special to all on campus, and I ask you to support us as and when you can,” Paris concluded. “Some of our games are less than an hour away, so no better to spend a Wednesday or Saturday evening. I would love for someone to start a supporters’ club to really boost the team. Feel free to contact me if you are interested.”
The Men’s soccer team started their season Aug.30 on the road, but will play their first home game Sept. 15 Vs. Embry-Riddle at 7 p.m. Make sure to keep updated with the live stream posted by Athletics.
