March 23 was the opening day not just for a new season, but for a new era in Saint Leo athletics. On this day for the first time in school history, the Saint Leo Lions hosted a beach volleyball tournament with their own team participating in it. Saint Leo created these new courts for the 2017-2018 school year, and it certainly did not disappoint. More than five brand new beach courts with beautiful regulation nets and lines cover the sandy area. There is even a fence with a gorgeous backdrop on it that reads “Saint Leo Beach Volleyball”; the money and effort put into these courts can easily be seen and admired. Leo’s indoor volleyball team has already proven to be quite a force in the league ending the season with an incredible 23-7 record. The women of the indoor team came together and took the court but this time in a different setting, sand. It was obvious that students and staff are extremely excited about this new addition to Saint Leo athletics because of the turn out this event had. The entire area was filled with students from all schools, as well as teachers who had a break from teaching. When asked how he felt about the new team, junior, computer science major Jason Delaney stated “It’s awesome to see this team unfold. There has been a long wait ever since these new courts were put it. I know for a fact my roommates and I were anxious about the start of the season because of how much we love the sport. We could be considered as regulars at the indoor games as we attend almost every one.” That was certainly the vibe every student and staff was giving off as the excitement and anticipation could be felt in the air. Although it was an exciting day for the sport, the Lions finished a disappointing 1-9 against Eckerd College and Florida International University. The next game will be away at Babson Park, Florida as the Lions take on Lincoln Memorial and Webber International University; the next home game will be March 29 vs. Saint Petersburg at 3 p.m.
