The men’s basketball team is on a roll this year. The Lions are led by the three Wisconsin natives Marcus Ruh, Jerrel Harris, and Trent Thomas; each averaging at least 13 points a contest.

Against conference opponents in December and early January, the University looked sharp going 4-1 with their only loss coming against the University of Tampa. The Lions went on an 8 game winning streak before the loss. They are spreading the ball around the court and playing solid defense, allowing roughly 63 points a game.

With four seniors ready to graduate after this season, the mixture of young talent on the team has been striving in the minutes they are given. Juniors Spenser Mitchell and Chim Kadima give lead way to next season as they both play solid defense and contain steady offensive awareness.  Freshman guards Trey Griseck and Jaylon Bell have gained excellent experience thus far this season as their playing minutes have increased.

“Losing a player like Marcus Ruh will be tough, but I believe Jerrel Harris will lead the team with his offensive talent next season,” said Sophomore Paola Vasquez.

Tom Neary and Shaun Adams have done their jobs down low in the paint, rarely giving up an easy basket. The combination of their experience will help with Freshman Stephane Beneche who will certainly be the middle man for the next couple of years standing at 6’8. Sophomores Taylor Bassett, with his deadly outside three point shot, and Cale Girten, with his defensive ability, will provide much depth for Saint Leo.

The overall perception of the team is that they will win it all this year. High expectations have surfaced this squad since day one with the addition of a fourth coach and young up and coming talent. Starting off nationally ranked for division two as well as beating Miami in exhibition and barely losing to Florida State was the start of what has been a great ride towards the ultimate goal. Nothing more, nothing less: a national championship.

The upcoming schedule in February consists of eight games, all of which are conference matchups. On Saturday, Feb. 9, Saint Leo will have their senior day when they face Barry University.
