Lions’ Track Takes on Embry-Riddle Spikes Classic

Embry Riddle Distance Classic (Friday 4/6)

On Friday, April 6, two members of Saint Leo Men’s Track team traveled to Daytona to compete in the Embry Riddle Spikes Classic.

In hot and humid conditions freshman Tadgh McGinty and graduate student Joshua Sickinger competed in the 3,000m steeplechase. The two Lions completed the podium with a second and third place performance. Florida Tech athlete, Malte Stockhausen claimed the victory in 9.39.

Freshman Tadgh McGinty claimed second place in a time of 9.51, which was 15 seconds off his personal best time of 9.35 set at the UCF gold coast challenge.

Graduate student Joshua Sickinger came in just behind McGinty to claim a third place finish. The German native came through the finish in a time of 9.51.65. This time was over 21 seconds slower than his personal best  of 9.30 which was set last year at the USF track and field meet.

Embry Riddle Distance Classic (Saturday 4/7)

Seniors Niclas Bez and Lauren Cbusak traveled to Daytona to race  Saturday afternoon in the 800m. The weather turned out to be pretty stormy throughout the day causing delays that Bez and Cbusak had to be ready for. The two middle distance specialists had a great day between them with Bez finishing first overall and Cbusak coming home sixth overall.

German native, Niclas Bez completed the two lap race in a time of 1.52.46 to crush the rest of the field in the last 50m. Bez’s time was very close to the NCAA provincial standard which is 1.52.16. Bez managed to walk away with a new personal best beating his previous best time of 1.52.61 which was set at the Tampa Track Classic last year.

Senior Lauren Cbusak also competed in the two lap race finishing in a strong time of 2.17.82 to take sixth place overall. This time was over one second slower than her personal best of 2.16.56 which was set at the University of Florida track meet two weeks ago.

Up next: The Lions return next week to race at the University of Florida Tom Jones Memorial which is going to be held Friday, April 13.
