Pop culture has always had a play in the importance of that New Year’s kiss. Movies like “New Year’s Eve” revolve around how crucial it is to get that kiss once the ball drops. Many crave those fireworks and sparks that fly when they finally get that smooch at midnight.
The New Year’s kiss is thought to have come about in the Middle Ages. It was said that the person one shares their kiss with would remain with them into the new year, hence why people would usually kiss their significant other. This was also a very vulnerable time when evil spirits would run wild and take advantage of people. This took place during the period of Yuletide in the English culture, during which time kissing brought protection and the support of loved ones during a susceptible time of year.
It is also said that if someone is unable to have a new year’s kiss that, unfortunately, their year will be very lonely. But don’t fret! Even popular celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence can admit that they have never had a New Year’s kiss. In Lawrence’s interview with Seth Meyers, she talks about how movies like “How Harry Met Sally” have ruined New Year’s for her and that she has never had fun on NYE because she’s always worrying about getting that kiss. However, JLaw seems pretty successful regardless of ever getting kissed on New Years.
Even though this New Year’s celebration has already passed, there is always an opportunity to make this year a great one fill with love and support from those around you, regardless of what those silly traditions say.
