As Valentine’s Day approaches, a range of emotions, including loneliness and stress, can surface.

It’s important to remember that whether you’re in a relationship or single, you can make the holiday meaningful.

Instead of focusing on feelings of isolation or anxiety this year, embrace the holiday with a positive outlook.

There are many ways to celebrate, such as practicing self-love, which is vital. Take the day to focus on nurturing yourself—write yourself a love letter, indulge in a self-care routine, or treat yourself to a special bakery item. Kindness toward yourself is essential.

College life can be stressful, so taking a break for self-care on Valentine’s Day or anytime in February is a great way to participate in the holiday and give yourself some relief.

In addition to self-love, prioritizing your mental health is key. Use Valentine’s Day as a reminder to take care of yourself—get a good night’s sleep, enjoy nourishing meals, read your Bible, exercise, or join a support group.

Maddie Melendez, a senior majoring in criminal justice and homeland security, said, “Taking care of your mental health is so important, and you can use Valentine’s Day to focus on celebrating the most important relationship of all—the one you have with yourself.”

Feeling down in February is common, whether it’s due to school stress or not being in a relationship during “love month.” Don’t let those feelings rule your heart.

To make your Valentine’s Day more special, do activities you love. Read, go for a walk, take a weekend trip, journal, volunteer, or have dinner with friends or a significant other. You can also gift yourself, or others, flowers or chocolate.

The most important part of Valentine’s Day is spreading love. Do what brings you joy and share that love with others to make their day special too.

Above all, remember that it’s normal to feel anxious during this time. You’re not alone. Take a deep breath and treat yourself with kindness.
