It has been a season high for the University Softball Team as the ladies are now at an impressive 34-14 record and sit in first place with a Sunshine State Conference record of 14-4. The ladies hosted the Eckerd College Tritons in Conference Action this weekend and did not disappoint Lion fans as they swept the Tritons in impressive fashion.
On April 12 at the Saint Leo Softball Complex, the Lions decimated the Eckerd College Tritons with a final score of 14-0 and a mercy rule was activated with this game only going into five innings. In this game, the Lions saw head coach John Conway earn his 300th career win and Sarah Steiner earn a triple and Brittany Ewing a double. Seven additional Lions joined Steiner and Ewing in run counts with Chelsey Steedley, Victoria Obermeier, Rachelle Gremo, Kelsey LaNeave, Angela Kafalas and Torrie Weindorf each knocking in two runs. Freshman pitcher Alana Tabel only allowed three hits and one walk in the five inning match.
In a double header Senior Day on Saturday, the Lions took both wins from the Eckerd Tritions, including a very close 6-5 match win and a 9-0 shutout. This season was a new record for the ladies as they stole 134 bases so far with 5 coming from this Saturday, breaking the old record of 131 bases. During the two games, the Lions saw Gremo and Steiner make great efforts with Steiner smashing a two-run homerun and Gremo with a double. The softball ladies honored Gremo and fellow pitcher Megan Still, who threw for most of the first game alongside Tabel and Ashley Ehlers.
The Lions now return to away action as they face off against conference rivals Lynn and Florida Southern at their respective home field over the last two weekends in April.
