On World Kindness Day, Nov. 13, the sisters of Gamma Upsilon sorority came together to spread a powerful message across campus: kindness is more than a simple act—it’s a lasting impact.
Hosting an event aimed at encouraging random acts of kindness and sharing words of affirmation, Gamma invited students to “pay it forward,” reminding everyone that even the smallest gestures can make a difference.
World Kindness Day is an annual global movement designed to promote kindness, compassion, and self-care. The sorority took this as an opportunity to foster a culture of kindness within the community.
A senior studying business management, Alyssa Pumo, explained the inspiration behind the event, saying, “We think it’s nice to bring kindness around campus. Some people need a little bit of reminding about what kindness is, with it being World Kindness Day, we can promote that in a way that really engages students.”
The theme of kindness has never been more relevant, as today’s fast-paced, often stressful world can make acts of goodwill easy to overlook. Pumo shared why kindness holds such importance, not just within their sorority but across society.
“People don’t realize how far kindness goes,” she said. “For me, if I get a compliment, I’ll send that compliment to the next girl I see. I love making people’s days. If someone seems sad, I want to make their day better by spreading kindness.”
Gamma’s event offered a variety of ways for students to get involved, from writing and sharing uplifting messages to participating in activities that emphasized community and care.
These random acts, whether a quick compliment, a smile, or an encouraging note, might seem small but can create lasting impressions. Pumo reflected on how these moments can ripple out to positively impact individuals and communities.
“People could be going through a lot, and just one simple compliment can change their day completely,” she said.
Being part of Gamma has given Pumo and many of her sisters a deeper understanding of kindness and its role in building community.
“I’ve been in Gamma since my freshman year,” she shared. “Having a group of girls and a sense of community on campus has encouraged me to want to give others that same feeling. Being kind to my sisters and encouraging them to be kind helps spread kindness even further.”
In a world where people often feel disconnected, events like Gamma’s World Kindness Day celebration remind everyone of the power of kindness. Small gestures—often unnoticed or underappreciated—can uplift those around us, bridging gaps and creating connections that last beyond a single day.
By encouraging students to “pay it forward,” Gamma Upsilon has left an important mark on the campus community, inspiring everyone to make kindness a part of their everyday lives.
