On November 16, 2010, the gallery in St. Edward Hall showcased pictures and drawings of Saint Leo University’s very own artists.
The gallery, located on the bottom floor of St. Edward Hall, was newly decorated in students’ work from this semester’s photography and drawing classes. Submissions came from the students in Beginning Photography, Intermediate Photography, Drawing, and Intermediate Drawing. The photography displayed was a variety of both black and white and color digital photos and photograms. The drawings were all different, in varying styles and colors, but each uniquely creative.
The atmosphere in the room had an elegant touch. In the center of the room, a long table was lined with appetizers, hot food, fruit, desserts, and drinks. For those attending the show, a musical number resonated through the room, providing listening pleasure as spectators admired the work. The musical artists being showcased were freshman Hillary Hightower and sophomore Chris Collier. Their musical talents were impressive as were the many, many photographs and drawings. Clearly these students have been hard at work.
One attendee seen closely admiring much of the work was Plant Operations worker Johnny Ortero. He appeared to be very pleased with the work and when asked what he thought about it, he smiled and said, “I think they’re good. They’re really good.”
He was especially impressed with a drawing by Donna Hoar, from Intermediate Drawing. She had a few drawings on display, but this one “looked so real,” he said.
The crowd was a decent size for 4:30 p.m. on a Tuesday afternoon. Students, staff, and faculty alike strolled through the gallery, observing work, eating, and socializing. Some attendees included the Dean of Arts Dr. Spoto, Professor Dr. Wilt, photography teacher Mr. Hughson, and Job Location and Development coordinator Janis Lockhart. Those mentioned and many others seemed to be enjoying the artwork and the social gathering. It was definitely a nice time to simply enjoy art for art’s sake.
