Do You Have What It Takes to Help Keep America Safe? 

On Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020, Saint Leo University took the time needed to acknowledge another fascinating career opportunity by bringing it right on campus and to the students.

Career Services Employee Spotlights gives students, facility, and visitors across campus access to learning more about the potential job positions they could become qualified for in the future.

For this occasion, Saint Leo highlighted the U.S. Border Patrol by bringing two representatives from the organization, Jason White from Houston, Texas and John Sturgeon from Columbia, Ohio. They spent their time on campus answering questions, giving out accessories and information, as well as highlighting the opportunities, qualifications, benefits, responsibilities, and the significance of the U.S Border patrol.

During their time on campus, they both elaborated on the people that were interested in the U.S Border Patrol about the positives of working in the organization.

This includes how they offering 2-million-dollar in career opportunities, that a person can retire after 25 years, the salary starts at $60,000 which will rise to $100,000 within 3 to 4 years, federal health and life insurance, adding credit to military service, and providing a 401K.

A person who is training at the academy shall be given lessons on immigration, statutory laws, criminal justice, physical training, emergency vehicle operation, weapon marksmanship which includes learning how and when to use OC spray, sidearms, and handcuffs, as well knowing how to how to read, write, and speak Spanish in order to deal with non-English speaking foreigners.

Officers in training will also receive housing, meals, as well as fully salary when they first begin training which allows them to save up money in order to pay off student loans or for a new place to live once they start their new job.

Working for the U.S Border Patrol a person has responsibilities that are vital to protecting America, this includes enforcing federal law, protecting thousands of miles worth of the U.S land and coastal borders, screening foreigners coming in and out of the country, and intercepting contraband.

These duties are important because they ensure foreigners have a valid passport, VISA, and purpose for emissions into the US, as well as it helps prevents terrorist activity, illegal travel, the distribution of illegal substances, and the spread of health risk such as from the recent outbreak of the coronavirus in China.

The Border Patrol is an essential part of maintaining the American way of life that is committed to serving the country 24/7 by using according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection flyer age-old techniques and cutting-edge technology in the face of uncertainty

Having an important role in society the qualifications for this position has various requirements, Jason White a Border Patrol officer working for 13 years and John Sturgeon an officer who has committed 23 years to his role elaborated to me the process they took to become fully employed officers.

The hiring process takes about 9 months to complete. When applying a person must prove they have either a bachelor degree or a minimum 1-year experience of full-time general work. They possess a valid state driver’s license, are a U.S citizen and resident for at least 3 years, and unless a person possesses previous experience with federal law enforcement, they have to be under 40 years old.

After those requirements are met a person must submit a resume, take an online test, a written test, a medical and polygraph examination, a background check, a fitness and drug test, as well as answer a series of scenario-based questions.
