There are Greeks living on campus. However, they are not the toga gladiator kind (though some might like to think they are): they are the sorority and fraternity kind. Last week, the Greek organizations were looking for some new inductees through an event called Rush Week.
“I don’t really know anything about fraternities,” freshman Jacob Yates said. “I don’t even know about Rush Week.”
He is not the only one. There are many new students on campus who do not know much about this event.
Rush Week is the week where fraternities and sororities are given a chance to present themselves and show the rest of Saint Leo – most importantly incoming students – what they are about. There are four sororities and seven fraternities on campus, which gives students a wide variety from which to choose.
Rush week is not a week-long party, it is a lot of hard work. There are many events that are held throughout the academic year (so if any student happens to miss it in the fall, there are still opportunities in the spring. It is all about how involved in Greek life one wants to be. Depending on the desired level of involvement, there are campus events, fundraisers, and pledges that take place.
Events of Rush week include meetings at the boardrooms, going to the brag tables that are set up to give people a chance to learn more, attending hour-long interest parties for each group, going to preference night, and then showing up to “Bid Day.” Bid Day is the last event when sororities and fraternities will send bids to the students they want for their sisterhood or brotherhood.
Rushing primarily deals with the incoming freshmen or transfer students on campus who have an interest in learning more about Greek life. If one is interested in rushing, he or she must have at least 12 credits and a 2.5 GPA or higher to be eligible.
