Girl Takeover: Henderson Hall

For the freshman on Saint Leo University’s campus, you may think Henderson hall was predominantly all girls and Benoit hall was for all guys. In this circumstance you would be wrong.

Henderson Hall, located on the east side of campus is now home to 180 women this year, while Benoit houses the male students. Predominately freshman students live in these halls. It wasn’t always like this though.

Last year Henderson was predominately all boys. There was one section on the first floor for women while the rest of the floors were for the male students. At this time Benoit was an all-girls dorm.

This change is due to the increased enrollment of girls over guys. This year Saint Leo enrolled a significantly greater amount of women than men in any previous year. Due to this they needed to make more space for the women to live. Saint Leo decided to make Henderson an all-girls dorm and Benoit all boys.

Why was there this sudden influx of women over men this school year? Could it be that in 1994 more girls born rather than boys? Or that more women graduated this previous year than boys did? The answers to these questions are not really clear.

“As a freshman living in Henderson it was all guys, the following year a section of the first floor was left for women students. I would have rather it been all guys again. I think when you integrate the buildings a lot of drama happens,” stated Junior Corey Saccone who loved in Henderson hall his freshman and sophomore years.

Now to hear a girls perspective. “I liked it being co-ed, all those girls in a big dorm equals too many hormones for me. I liked being able to go upstairs and see my guy friends but just walking downstairs to my room if I wanted to escape,” stated sophomore Bri Waller who lived in Henderson her freshman year at Saint Leo.

It’s interesting to see how male and female opinions differ. Boys would rather their dorm be all boys in order to stay away from female drama. Girls would rather have co-ed dorms in order to escape the craziness of a building full of female hormones.

Now Henderson is all girls due to the increase in female students over male students. Once again, Henderson is back to how it originally should have been; a one gender dorm building.
