Getting Jiggy with it

“This is how we do it!” the popular 1995 song by Montell Jordan kicked off Sigma Gamma Rho’s 90’s themed party in the SCC Boardroom on Sept. 30. The night was filled with laughter and many different dance moves reminiscent of 1990’s pop culture.

Gabrielle Stubbs, a first-year freshman from The Bahamas, stated that “the event is something different in a college environment.”

The event put, on by the ladies of the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated, drew a variety of students to the dance floor. The sorority’s Vice President, Blaire Huggins, stated that she wanted to create an event that brought unity between all cultures and races on campus, along with Greek and non-Greek persons.

The organization, which was founded on November 12, 1922, is a historically black sorority established at Butler University Indianapolis, Indiana. Their focus areas are Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service and operate under the “Slogan Greater Service, Greater Progress.”

“We bring in and possess strong-minded, unique personality, educated ladies who want to make a difference in the community. We are more than strolling and stepping,” Huggins stated with great enthusiasm.

As the fluorescent neon lights illuminated the room, countless 90’s hits such as; Will Smith’s “Getting Jiggy with it” and Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “ Baby Got back” excited the crowd. This led to many dance offs and “epic” rap battles.

“The party met my expectations in raising money for the sorority. Though the numbers were not there, the quality of the individuals who came made it fun and made the party wild,” said Huggins. “I would like to say thank you to the people who came and showed out with us!”

Blaire said this is only the first of many events that the sorority has planned this semester. There will be a Brush EZ event for ladies on Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m, and a social hour Oct. 11 at 7:40 p.m. for all students to get to know the organization better.

Blaire Huggins concluded that the organization acts as a community where they are there for each other. The 90’s party and future events are meant to be fun, but they also act as a means of bringing students together. When they work as a team, students will undoubtedly find success in their education.
