If there is something that people love, it is sports!

Mainly in the U.S., football specifically, is a beloved sport among many people from all generations. At Saint Leo, it is no different. Many students love football and are passionate about watching the game; the attendance at the Superbowl Watch Party at Saint Leo University this past weekend is proof of that.

This event happened on Sunday, Feb. 9, in the Student Community Center’s boardrooms, and it started at 6:00 p.m. The event was hosted by the Campus Activity Board (CAB) and was a great opportunity for students to gather and enjoy the end of this football season together.

The football season happens every year, starting one week after the Labor Day holiday and ending in early January. After that, the season’s playoff starts. The playoffs are the last part of the NFL championship and determine which team is going to be the champion of the annual season.

Playoffs are the annual NFL tournament composed of a series of single-elimination games. The Super Bowl is the very last game of the playoffs and the game that finally decides the champion of the year.

This is why for sports fans, this game is one of the unmissable events of the year. Saint Leo has held the Super Bowl Watch Party event in some of the previous years to make the final game a special occasion on campus as well.

Events like the Super Bowl Watch Party are also a great opportunity for freshmen who are still trying to adapt to college life to reach out and socialize. Students who were used to watching this type of game or championship with their loved ones still had the chance of making it a special day and having fun, even if distant from home.

The idea was for students to gather to enjoy this moment, having the opportunity to collectively celebrate the end of the football season, and, depending on the situation, the winning of their favorite team together.

Beyond the space for students to watch the game, CAB provided snacks and drinks for the students who joined, and the ones who went had the opportunity to participate in a raffle for the chance of winning prizes such as FUZ and Benedict’s [campus café shops] gift cards. The biggest prize of the night was a TV.

“This year, the event idea was kind of impromptu, a fellow board member came up with the idea and asked me to collaborate, so I agreed from there.” Said Cindy Cadichon, a junior pre-med student majoring in medical humanities, who is also CAB’s Special Events chair.

“We just started brainstorming on what food to serve and something to make it fun, so that’s when we decided on a raffle and to win a TV, which is a fun prize for students,” added Cadichon.

One of the nicest things about the Super Bowl is the halftime show, which is a special concert of a famous singer that sometimes counts on the participation of other star figures.

This past Sunday, Kendrick Lamar was the artist who performed in the Super Bowl halftime show, and some of the stars who went on stage were the singers SZA and Mustard, as well as special appearances from the actor Samuel L. Jackson and the tennis star Serena Williams.

This Sunday, the teams that played for the Golden Football Ball were the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. The winners were the Eagles, making 42 points against 22 from the Chiefs.

The game ended, and regardless of whether their favorite team won or not, it was possible to see that the students who attended the Super Bowl Watch Party had a lot of fun! Because at the end of the day, it is about the whole entertainment experience that creates good memories for the future.

Cadichon finalized by saying, “[Students had fun], and it was well attended. We might bring it back next year!”
