The College of Education is integrating new health related classes into the spring 2020 schedule of next year to peak the interests of bright students who are active, maintain exercise regiments, and want to gain perspective on what’s its like to be a coach and/or a personal trainer.

The courses are PED 320 Theory and Practice of Coaching along with PED 300 Special Topics: Theory and Practice of Personal Training, and will offer a certification in coaching principles and an ACE personal trainer certification along with the knowledge to teach others the skills you’ll master and how to effectively guide clients to living their best healthiest life. These classes will be curated to peak the interests of young students involved in sports, exercise, or just an active lifestyle, and want to put those skills to good use.

These courses will provide a great foundation of skills for students who not only want to share their healthy tips but make a little side money along the way. Brandy Pollicita, M.S. and instructor of Health and wellness, talked about how after the Fitness Center on campus open up, many job opportunities for coaches and personal trainers will be needed and provided for on campus.

“That’s what they look for,” said Pollicita.

Even for students who’d like to be future teachers, getting a certification for either of these things can be very helpful. Not only will you make some extra side money, but when interviewing for jobs at public schools, having either of these certifications will give you a step up above any of the other potential hires. Schools are constantly looking and struggling to find teachers that have experience with coaching.

Taking one or both of these classes you will have that experience schools are craving so desperately right now.

“For future educators, it would be extremely beneficial for them.” Pollicita mentioned. “It offers a baseline to specializations that are way more marketable that other teacher at a high school.”

Both of these courses will be offered in the spring of 2020 and will not help towards any major at the moment. However, for students looking for a better way to express themselves in an active environment and are willing to get out of their comfort zone, why not try one of these classes.

“It keeps building onto your interests in health and provides a place to apply these practices.” Said Pollicita. “It helps with leadership and integrates that into them.”

In addition to all of these benefits, with one of these certifications, you have just gained another accomplishment here at Saint Leo and can add on another line to any future resume. Perhaps with one of these certifications, you’ll get a job either here on campus or at a gym nearby and can add that a resume as well. The suggestion here is that Saint Leo will continue to provide amazing opportunities for their students, with an impressive list of reasons to take the courses, why not take a chance and register for them. Registration for these courses will start on October 28 with 320 taking place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:30-1:50, while 300 will be offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10:30-11:20
