Saint Leo students may have been alarmed a little over a week ago to receive an email from Residence Life regarding the institution of weekly walkthroughs to observe the conditions of the residence halls on campus. Many thought that this meant weekly room inspections from Residence Life, conducted under the guise of maintenance issues.
Halloween is coming up hastily. On top of dressing out of your usual element on the actual holiday, there are parties that require you to do the same. Being a college student is expensive, and unfortunately, so are Halloween costumes. The good news is you do not need much money to put together attention-grabbing costumes. You probably have many of the items needed for the look you desire within your grasp. You might have to buy two or three signature pieces. Spending ten dollars while looking original is better than spending sixty dollars and bumping into someone wearing the same outfit.
For almost 30 years, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure movement has worked diligently to spread Breast Cancer Awareness to the masses and become the largest source of nonprofit organizations dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this year, organizations and students on Saint Leo University’s campus are joining in on the fight against breast cancer like never before; many events are taking place on campus in support of breast cancer awareness.
One of Saint Leo University’s many traditions includes that of Moonlight Madness – an annual event that kicks off the start of the men’s and women’s basketball seasons. Much like Saint Leo, larger schools host events to indicate the beginning of their athletic program’s basketball seasons. However, despite the fact that Saint Leo hosts such an event every year, this year’s Moonlight Madness will be somewhat different than last year’s.
As you all may know by now, the hunt for October is finally over and the MLB Playoffs have started. The teams that made the playoffs are the New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, Tampa Bay Rays, Philadelphia Phillies, Milwaukee Brewers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and the St. Louis Cardinals. It was a long season and now the hunt for the World Series trophy begins. We should see how each team got to the playoffs.
Free t-shirts have been given out at sporting events and games for years at Saint Leo University. Most recently the unveiling of Fritz the Lion was accompanied with a free t-shirt give away. The Roarwards Program was promoted with a free t-shirt when students signed up, as well as a t-shirts give away at the Activities Fair.

On Thursday evening, September 29, 2011, placed on top of a trailer outside the Student Activities Building, was what used to be a Mazda 626. Renee Napier is the mother of Meagan Napier, who along with her best friend Lisa Jo Dickson, was killed in the Mazda by drunk driver Eric Small-ridge. Napier tows the Mazda from school to school and has made it her mission to raise awareness of the danger of driving under the influence of alcohol, and to promote forgiveness and healing.
You all may have experienced Nintendo’s Wii console. If so, you probably fell in love with its motion controls and or games such as Mario Kart, Wii Sports, or even Mr. Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy series. You’re probably thinking: what more can Nintendo do? Do they even have any more ideas? Well, the answer is yes. Nintendo will soon be launching a new game known as Wii U. It may be a strange name, but what this system has to offer sends gaming evolution into a new era.
The Lions’ Pride Newspaper would like to pay tribute to faculty and staff for playing a key role in making Saint Leo University’s environment a great place to learn. This week’s spotlight is on Dr. David Persky who is Assistant to the President at Saint Leo University and is also currently acting as the Saint Leo University’s Board of Governors’ General Counsel until a new General Counsel comes in on September 26, 2011. Dr. Persky earned his B.A. in social science from Southern Methodist University, his M.S. in personnel counseling from Miami University in Ohio, his Ph.D. in higher education from Florida State University, and his J.D. from Stetson University College of law.
