Saint Leo University is known for its close relationship with BloodNetUSA, with a focus on the core value of responsible stewardship. Throughout the academic year the university hosts numerous blood drives in association with the charity, and with Valentine’s Day approaching there is a push for one to not only give their heart, but also to consider giving some blood.
Yes, that’s right ladies and gentlemen the semester is back in full swing. Some students are running around making sure that they print their papers before class starts, some are making sure that they submit their work to www.turnitin.com on time. Whatever the task may be, students can be found all over campus pulling their hair out as the semester becomes more hectic.

Joe Paterno, the face of Penn State University for 46 years, died of lung cancer Sunday, Jan. 22 at the age of 85. As head coach at Penn State, Paterno amassed more victories than any other man in the history of major college football and garnered a reputation as the epitome of integrity. His legacy, however, took a tragic turn in the fall of last year, when shocking allegations emerged against one of his long-time assistant coaches.

Anyone who has ever come down with the flu has experienced the miserable feeling of muscle aches, fever, headaches, a runny nose, sore throat, and vomiting, and/or diarrhea. Medical professionals recommend that everyone from six months of age and older have a yearly flu shot. As a student, coming down with the flu can be disastrous because the lack of energy and miserable feelings one experiences will interfere with their schoolwork. When one has the flu also becomes very contagious and spread the flu to many others in their presence.
In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. day, Saint Leo University invited Al Duncan, motivational speaker and tireless advocate for youth empowerment, to speak about his personal experiences, and how Martin Luther King, Jr’s philosophy on servant leadership has changed his life and helped him shape the lives of others. On Monday, Jan. 16, Father Stephan Brown welcomed everyone and started the program with an invocation prayer. Guest speaker Al Duncan was introduced and took the stage.
It is that time of the year again, where all of Greek life gets ready to welcome those at Saint Leo University to get to know more about their organizations, and hopefully grab the interest of Saint Leo’s finest as Spring Recruitment 2012 kicks into gear. For those not familiar with spring recruitment or how it works, it is a week filled with socials and events to help get to know the Greek organizations on campus. There are many reasons to come out and get involved during this week, not only for those wishing to join a Greek organization, but also to meet new people and network.
Dade City’s newest coffee house and cafe, Sufficient Grounds, was the site of an open-mic event on Thursday, Sept. 1. A multitude of Saint Leo students, faculty, and staff, as well as local Dade City residents, packed the small venue for a night of music, poetry, and performance pieces.
On Oct. 27 the NCAA Division I Board of Directors voted on a few proposals that will allow each conference to make the decision on whether or not its member institutions can increase the student-athlete scholarship package to include the full cost of attendance. The proposal also includes the possibilities of multi-year scholarships as well as making the academic standards tougher on student-athletes. After the proposals were accepted NCAA president Mark Emmert said, “It was one of the most aggressive and fullest agendas the board has ever faced.” They moved with dispatch on it, and I think they’re taking positive steps for schools and student-athletes” (Associated Press).
