Welcome back, Lions! It’s the start of semester two. The feeling of leaving your family and hometown and coming back after the repetition of being with them for a whole month can be hard. It’s difficult to get your head back into the right mindset after resting your brain for a month. Here are some tips that can help you get back on track after the long break!
A great way to get back into business is when you start classes, make it fun and organized. You can do this by going to your local store and buying colorful folders or binders with designs and patterns. Being excited to use school supplies can help you be excited for class. Also, buy a new planner for the year, and write down your schedule for the semester. It helps you look forward to what you have planned for the new semester but also keeps you put together.
Professor Tasha Chambers, first year experience professor and executive assistant said, “I set clear goals to guide my actions and decisions. Academic goals involve staying organized, creating detailed schedules, and fostering a well-engaged classroom environment.”
On the first week back after Winter break, Saint Leo CAB hosts events every day such as Free Coffee, Bingo, and Silent Disco. These events are a great way to reconnect with friends after weeks apart or a great way to meet new people! It also is a fun way to start the school year.
Rosie Feiler, a freshman majoring in Criminal Justic gave a tip on how to keep a good mindset for the new semester,
“Give yourself rewards for staying on track and studying so it doesn’t feel like you’re doing all this schoolwork for nothing.”
Another way to keep a great mindset is to go and study somewhere besides the library or your dorm. Benedict’s Coffee Shop on campus is a great study spot to study with friends or if you want to study in a more peaceful setting, the Bowl is quiet and beautiful and provides lawn chairs. It can get boring if you’re studying in your room all the time. It’s good to get some fresh air and be outside.
Professor Jennifer Harman, professor of language studies and arts gives advice to students as they are starting the new year.
“One tip I can offer that’s always been helpful to me is to plan ahead as much as possible.” She also mentions how important time management is and how organizing your classes, sports, and clubs in a planner is super beneficial.
It is hard to jump back into schoolwork after having a month off to relax, but hopefully these tips get you started off on the right foot. Have a great semester, Lions!
